In a survival game or a game like tlou, scarcity/durability mechanics make perfect sense and the rest of the game is balanced around it accordingly. In BOTW specifically, esp in the context of other mechanics, durability doesn't add anything to the game and is just a detriment to the player. Esp because its not in the context of resource scarcity.

Fusing a weapon to something gives bonus durability. A sturdy stick for instance has 24 base durability and then fusing it with a monster part (these are what give the best weapon damage upgrades) adds another 25 durability. For exceptional weapon finds, there are ways to repair them.
