It could use a piece of molded foam that accounts for this contour and perhaps even a plastic piece (maybe kydex?) over the foam (and behind the nylon cover of the pad) so pressure is evenly distributed to the tailgate rather than creating a pressure point on the body line. I doubt its what anyone expected early on but patents of the tailgate did show a manual function was available.Mobile service was able to fix it in about 1.5hrs. The rubber pads above the lower tailgate had worn the exterior layer. The underlying layer was gummy and the door was sticking on the bumper. Technician had to take apart the inside of the lower tailgate to get the top to release. The pads don't fit very well and unless someone designs a Rivian specific one I don't think any pad will be that great. The tailgate is too thick and the middle tailgate panel interferes as shown in the pics above. The middle panel also makes installation more time consuming.
