Johnson outboard timing adjustment.
1) Set the cam follower on the carb linkage to line up with the small mark on the cam. 2) With a timing light hooked up to#1 cyl, and the engine idling- set the pickup timing at 4 deg ATDC for this engine. 3) It says to advance the timing by lengthening the throttle rod and retard the timing by shortening the rod.

I am trying to adjust the max timing stopper because when I got the outboard the stopper was adjusted 1/2 to 3/4 inch away from the edge of the timing plate. It appears that on my 1993 Johnson 25hp, one has to set the Joe Reeves method at 0 degrees off the factory specified maximum spark advance. I will re-set it with the Joe Reeves Method tomorrow to 30 degrees, that is, the Joe Reeves Method but minus 0 degrees.
