I noticed that you can either take a choice to seal the dimensional portal or not; sealing it adds another section to the astral rift plot, which then concludes. Not sealing it ends the rift plot immediately and generates a wormhole. I didn’t check what’s on the other side of the wormhole, but it’s presumably some kind of threat.
I've only done it once and IIRC, it applied ever-increasing research bonuses plus ever-increasing stability maluses until it threatens to destroy the planet. There comes a point when you have fleets big enough to defeat the smaller fleets, or you have enough stuff stacked in Terminal Egress to fend of one or two at once, but they'll randomly get wiped out because the 11M one stops by instead of one of the other 4M fleets.

I cannot made any proper advance in the galaxy, because of those overwhelming shits, and I can't attack their first dimension portal. I killed one portal, and one other was closed by NPC. I reached the first portal several times, but it simple cannot be attacked.
