Turns out all you have to do is locate the DTC connector by your right knee under bottom of dash, it points downward. Make sure key is out of ignition, Lay on your back, insert wire between pin 4 and pin 9.

I just had the same problem with the blinking D light and it is in the vehicle's manual. The blinking D light does refer to your automatic transmission, in my case we had the trans fluid changed 2 months ago for the 95K service. It turns out that the dealer did not put enough trans fluid.

Get the car scanned and get the DTC. Also whining noise has a lot to do with worn gears inside the transmission not making proper contact.
