Actually, from watching Voltariux these last few days (1500+ lp challenger EUW), you can open fort 9/10 games (basically he only plays a real board if he gets spoils of war, or multiple great 2* with a great item combination) and it is more important to pre-level to 5 and hold 4 units after the start of the 2-6 fight, than to keep the 50 gold interval.

The level 7 and level 8 timings are honestly absurdly flexible; you can go to level 7 anywhere from 3-5 to 4-1 and to level 8 on 4-1 to 5-1 depending entirely on game state.
