The op said 500 to 800 yards and listed the animals he would be hunting. 6.5 are great I hunted alot with 6.5-06 ackley and 6.5-280 ackley. Did wonders on antelope deer and worked on elk but those distances I'd say the 280 ackley is better. But 800 yards on elk I'd say need a bigger 7mm or 30 cal at least.

Thanks to the good advice provided me in this thread, the 6.5 prc build turned out great and I am thoroughly enjoying shooting it. This was 2 weeks ago shooting steel at 428 yards in a new cut-over against the far wood line. That said, the 280 AI itch persisted and I am having one of my 30-06's rebarreled to 280AI.

I was surprised the 160 accubond dropped below 1500 ft. lbs. past 500 yards when started at 2920. I'm shooting 162 ELD-X out of my 7mm-08 at 2650 and could run them at 2700 if I wanted. Those are only 100 ft. lbs. behind the .280 AI/Accubond combo at 500 yards, with probably 2/3 the recoil. Really makes me appreciate the high BC of those ELD-X ...

I’ve got an ackley (two actually) and a 6.5 prc. The prc shoots fine, but I go to the ackley every time. First 280 was built with a 25” tube, next has a 26” proof carbon.
